There is a wide range of rejuvenating treatments available to halt the ravages of time. Most of these, hitherto the preserve of the rich and famous, are now within the reach of all of us. If you are considering treatment for the first time, where do you start? A good look in the mirror can usually provide a clue – be it deep down frown lines on the face, or areas where volume has been lost, including the neck leading to obvious wrinkling, or even those lines from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, which give you a ‘sad’ appearance. Ageing, sun damage, gravity and muscle action in frowning, talking, laughing, crying, produce crease lines and wrinkles. When these processes are repeated often enough, permanent skin creases develop which may persist even when relaxed.
A visit to your specialist nurse not only confirms your suspicions but also helps you to arrive at the appropriate treatment. Non surgical options include botox and biological fillers, e.g. Restylane, Juvederm, Aquamid etc., and chemical peels .
Botox has been used in cosmetic surgery since 1988. It is a highly purified form of type A strain of botulinum toxin capable on injection into over active muscles, of eliminating their activity. Hence it is effective for neutralising frown lines, longitudinal forehead lines and crow’s feet or ‘laughter lines’. Another important use of botox is the treatment of excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis, which occurs in 0.5% of the population in the palm, soles of the feet and armpits.
Other non-surgical treatments involve filling facial and neck lines with a choice of biological fillers, which are designed to fill the affected parts. Restylane, perlane, juvederm, hyalaform, hydrafill, to name a few, are all derivates of hyaluronic acid ( a substance found in abundance in young tissues and skin responsible for skin hydration, but deficient in older skin ). Fillers are administered by injection with a fine needle beneath the lines or wrinkles to ‘plump’ them out, thus giving the skin a more youthful, fuller appearance. Within 3-5 days of a facial rejuvenation procedure, the effect becomes apparent and the result can last for around 6-9 months.
